Sweet Ellies

This evocative charcoal piece captures a tender moment of two baby elephants playfully tumbling beneath the expansive African sky. The broad, open savannah stretches behind them, rendered in soft, sweeping strokes of charcoal that evoke a sense of both freedom and vulnerability. The young elephants are drawn with delicate yet expressive lines—one reaching clumsily with its trunk toward the other, who is mid-lurch in a joyful, uncoordinated bound.

What lends this scene its gentle poignancy is not just the subject matter, but the unspoken truth behind it: newborn elephants are not born knowing how to use their trunks. Despite the trunk being one of their most vital tools—for breathing, grasping, drinking, and social interaction—it takes months of trial and error for calves to master its use. In the early days, their movements are charmingly erratic; they may trip over their own trunks, suck on them like thumbs, or wave them about with little control. The artist captures this beautifully: one calf’s trunk appears to flop in mid-air, echoing its inexperience, while the other’s trunk brushes the ground in a tentative gesture of mimicry.
