Wild Cuddles II

I constantly wax lyrical about the African Wild Dog. They are an enigma. One of a kind. Each dog has different patterns so if you happen to see one in the wild and take a snapshot you can easily identify this individual again. They rely heavily on each other and pack bonds are strong.  Catching glimpses of denning puppies are even more special and that's what you can see here.

I spent a whole day with a pack at a reserve where the dogs were fairly habituated as they are the source for returning packs of dogs to areas where the dogs have been extinct for a very long time. So, each year, WildACT takes dispersing puppies and makes new packs with them to take them off to their new home where the ranges are large enough for them and where they will be well protected.

Usually you shouldn't go near these dens as it can have catastrophic results, but in this case, we were assured that we were not disturbing the course of nature. I was the only photographer with a ranger and my "assistant" and we were very careful not to disturb anything. The puppies were out of the den and were playing under the trees in dappled sunlight which made the photography a bit tricky. The pups had two minders and they were patiently waiting for the return of the pack. They were soon rewarded when the pack returned and it was such a precious moment to see all the pack members regurgitating food for the puppies who jumped in like ravenous wolves to get their fill.

Africa offers up the most amazing moments if we take the time to slow down and experience it all.
