The Hartmann Zebra
The Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra is not simply the subject of this work. It has become a visual vocabulary through which questions of endurance, adaptation, presence and survival are explored.
The repeated patterns of stripe and form cease to function merely as representation and begin instead to speak of persistence — of life continuing quietly and without spectacle in landscapes where survival is never guaranteed.
This body of work is less concerned with depicting an animal and more concerned with witnessing what it means to endure.
This became Collected Moments of Survival.
THE BOOK
Collected Moments of Survival: The Hartmann Zebra
The first volume of the series is devoted to Hartmann's mountain zebra of Namibia.
This is not a study of rarity, nor an attempt to document an animal at the point of disappearance. It is a record of presence — of animals continuing.
The book brings together photography, drawing and observation to create a quiet record of the relationship between animal and landscape.
Its visual language is deliberately restrained. Negative space, close observation and moments of stillness allow the animal to remain at the centre of the experience.

The book will be published as a limited edition in several forms, including Standard, Signed and Collector's Portfolio Editions.
A requiem for wildness — not a lament for something lost, but a quiet celebration of something that continues.
THE ORIGINAL WORKS
The book is accompanied by a collection of original artworks created during the making of the project.
These drawings form part of the same process of observation that lies behind the book. Each began with looking — at an animal, a gesture, a landscape, a moment of stillness — and attempting to translate that encounter into charcoal or pastel.
More than forty original works from the Hartmann zebra project will be available for acquisition.
LEARNING TO REMAIN STILL
There is another dimension to this project that is difficult to convey through an image alone.
Working in these landscapes has changed the way I observe.
To photograph an animal that is perfectly adapted to its surroundings requires something of the observer in return: stillness, patience and an awareness of what is happening beyond the obvious.
The longer I remain still, the more the landscape reveals.

THE PROJECT CONTINUES
Collected Moments of Survival is conceived as an ongoing series.
The Hartmann zebra is the beginning — the first volume in a continuing exploration of wildlife, landscape and endurance through observation, photography and drawing.
There is no attempt to hurry the process.
The animals determine the pace.
The landscape determines what can be seen.
And observation determines what is ultimately recorded.
