The story...
I saw this lioness at Phinda Game Reserve on the Natal North Coast. It was a rather large pride and they had six cubs that needed feeding every day. The cubs had probably just started eating meat. Early that morning the lions had taken down an antelope - we couldn’t see what it was - but they had obviously feasted on it and only the skeleton remained and the cubs were chewing away at it. Then suddenly the lions started looking up at the sky and when we followed their eyes we saw vultures circling above - vultures always try to move in on a fresh kill and are therefore always viewed with great suspicion. I was captivated by the intent stare of the lioness along with the beautiful line her neck made when it was stretched upward.
