The story...
In Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve I drove past a group of four rhinos casually grazing, they were so relaxed and minding their own business that I took out my camera and started photographing them individually. Suddenly I noticed that the male had looked up and he was determinedly heading straight for me. As he got closer to me he filled the frame of the camera and eventually all i had in the camera was one eye. Then I suddenly realised that he was really really close and moving closer all the time. It was unusual that he should so determinedly head straight for me that I started looking around and realised that I had parked my vehicle right next to the rhino midden. An area that is central to the territory of the male rhino and here I was almost on top of it. A male rhino always defecates in the same place and eventually there will be a huge space that is then called a midden. I then quickly retreated away from where I was parked and the rhino went back to grazing peacefully. I hope that by zooming in so close in this image I give you the experience of looking straight into a rhinos eyes up close...and as I felt at the time...very uncomfortable.
